    theban letter update: shits gone international
    it would appear that i am now the target of an INTERNATIONAL conspiracy spanning three continents. since my last post i have received three more letters, bringing the current total up to eight. one post marked "new zealand"(specific post office illegible)one "santa ana" CA(complete return address. not blacked out) and one "yorkshire" england(which i have not yet had time to examine as it is at my home and i am not.)

    the new zealand letter is the most intriguing so far. despite the fact that it's text is the same as the first three letters, this one is hand written on what looks to be a page from a sketchbook and smudged in places with some unknown substance. it is pictured below.

    the envelopes address is in a rather flamboyant hand and also bears a similar smudge on the bottom left corner. is this simply a case of an artistically inclined kiwi conspirator with a need to stand out in a crowd, or is there more to this unique letter?

    the CA letter is also rather curious as it is the only letter to date that has a return address that is not blacked out. could this be intentional? i googled the complete address and, lo and behold found a name and even a work phone number. the person attached to this address has a membership account with the "Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB)". it is entirely possible that this person has no connection to these events what so ever. anyone can write in a return address for wherever they like and this could turn out to be a complete dead end. never the less i do plan on calling the number listed in this information tomorrow. see where that leads.

    most of these are turning out to be repeat messages. to date i have only encountered the two messages, which i will refer to as LM1 and LM2(lizard message) from here on. LM1 seems to be focused on scaring the shit out of me with it's descriptions of lizards with sharp teeth and claws watching me at all times. in contrast, LM2 has more of a protective, warning angle. "look around you, we advise you" and all that. will a third message take a still different bent? i suppose i'll have to wait and see.

    theban letter update
    two more letters arrived yesterday. one with a blacked out return address similar to the AK letter, post marked "southeastern PA". from what i can make out on the blacked out bits it's specifically from west chester PA. the other has no return and is postmarked "portland OR". both are in a unique hand, and both were sent out on the 20th of july, just one day after my last journal entry. very curious that.

    the text, while in the exact same font, is different from the first three letters sent and is pictured below.

    the text deciphers to the same style of funky latin as before. it reads:

    observamus tuum faciem

    librum

    observamus tuum viuum

    diarium

    observamus tuos amicos

    observamus omnium

    videmus omnium

    noli scribe de

    lacertis in aranea

    aliter prohibebimus te

    monebamus te gibeault

    while i'm still working on a precise translation the general jist of it seems to be along the lines of "observe your making", "observe your life and friends/lovers", "observe everything", "lizards upon spider webs", "we advise you". things like that. it also mentions me by name, which is at once disturbing and ridiculous.

    as with the previous text i'm asking for help with the translation. it was suggested before that the author/s of these things do not seem to be fluent and i am inclined to agree. as such i think pretty much any translation, baring someone with a serious command of latin is going to come out a bit choppy. the basic idea of a warning definitely seems to shine through however.

    additional notes:

    * i feel more justified in my assumption that this is some kind of coordinated cross country project and not the work of a single person with some friends writing addresses and a remailing service. there are definite differences in both the paper weight and printer ink quality in each of the five letters so far. this would seem to indicate a selection of different printers and therefor different people.

    * the presence of the blacked out return address on two of the five letters is curious. especially considering how relatively easy it is to make out what's written underneath the ink. whether this is an intentional clue or just lazy people with a some pre addressed envelopes i do know know. i am however considering sending letters of my own to these addresses once more of the puzzle comes into focus.

    * i am expecting to receive a third letter containing this new text either today or tomorrow, as that seems to be the established pattern. unless however these new letters are intended to be stand alone bringing the total number to five, in accordance with the discordian law of fives perhaps. i don't know.

    * i have discovered the exact theban font used in the all of these letters. it is indeed hand drawn and was posted to a free font download site in august of 08. the creator of "Theban Alphabet 1.0" is a graphic designer and black metal fan from vasterbotten sweden. i've sent him an e-mail requesting some information, but have received no response as of yet.

    i really feel like this is by no means the end of my summer of mysterious letters. the picture being presented here is not even close to clear and i would like to think that a more reasonable communication with these people is forthcoming. also, since i at least half suspect that whoever is doing this is reading this post right now, i figure it couldn't hurt to address them directly at this time.

    dear anonymous letter senders,

    STOP BEING SO GOD DAMN VAGUE. i assure you, i am enjoying the game so far immensely. however i would greatly appreciate it if you would make your point a bit clearer before this thing drifts into the realm of the offensively annoying.

    sincerely,

    ~the target of your nation wide conspiracy.

    i am attempting to remain as rational and cautions as possible with this stuff. it is a foolish man indeed who treats something he does not understand with contempt.

    stay tuned for additional updates.

    theban letters
    alright, this may not be the best idea, but i'm at the end of my rope with this shit so here goes.

    last wednesday, july 15th i arrived home from work to discover a letter with a blacked out return address waiting from me. the postmark proclaimed "Anchorage AK" 11 july 2009. inside was this.

    it is a single sheet of 8.5 by 11 white computer paper containing 13 lines in theban, a magical cipher language from round about the 16th century. there is a one to one correspondence between theban and the letters in the old latin alphabet.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theban_alphabet

    so i recognize this curiously enough, having read a bit on theban in the past, and i make myself a cipher and work it for a few hours. now, i would like to point out here that i did realize this was pretty weird at the time, but then again i have a lot of weird friends and i did just turn 25 on the 8th. so i figure this could be some kind of elaborate birthday message, and that the theban will translate out to "happy birthday jerkface" or some such thing. however, this was not the case. below is pictured my working cipher page.

    what ended up coming out of the theban is what looks like a poem. some of the individual words seem to be in latin. but others suggest a later form of "church" or vulgar/vernacular latin or even proto italian. i'm fairly confident that i worked the cipher correctly, but it is possible that i mixed up a letter or two, so bear with me. below is the complete text as translated from the theban.

    oculi lacertarum

    vident te

    sempeo oculi

    lacertarum incumbunt te

    noli dice de lacertis

    noli cogitl de

    lacertos

    dentes lacertarum sunt

    acutissimi

    unoua lacertarum sunt

    dioissima

    noli vel commemora

    lacerta umquam

    a few words on thetranslation of latin/whatever the fuck this is: i do not claim to be a latin scholar or indeed a scholar of any kind. what i do have is two years of highshool latin, a serviceable latin/english dictionary and the internet. using these scant resources i've managed to hash out a few key words, but without the proper grammatical context. this is what i could manage so far:

    oculi=see/to see/eye
    lacertarum=lizard
    sempeo=always
    noli=to be unwilling
    commemora=to remind/relate/to keep in mind.
    dentes=teeth

    again, this is rough, and it has no grammatical context, so i don't know. it does however mention lizards SEVEN times. seven fucking times. which is a little weird. but wait. it gets much weirder.

    the following day, thursday july 16th i receive ANOTHER anonymous letter. this one has no blacked out return address, or indeed any return address what so ever. the handwriting for my address is different from the first alaska letter, and this one is postmarked "Boston MA" 15 july 2009. it contains the exact same letter. thirteen lines in theban. identical font. things are starting to get weirder.

    but wait! the day after that, friday july 17th. you guessed it. another letter. this one postmarked "Denver CO" 14 july 2009. the handwriting on my address would seem to indicate yet a third style distinct from the other two. it contains the same letter. identical.

    three identical coded letters in three days from three different people in three different cities. all addressed to me.

    WHAT. THE. FUCK.

    right now i have a few people asking a few other people who apparently know latin much better than i what they can make of it, but i'll tell you, it's slow going. i mean, maybe if i knew for certain it was actually latin, but it's clearly something else. so i don't have a solid translation yet. even once i get a solid translation, what then? what does any of this mean? who are these people and why are they doing this? why the lizard business? why the theban and the latin and the thirteen lines? why me?

    i have to say, it's more than a little exciting, but also creepy as shit. i've always wanted something like this to happen and now that it has my feelings are mixed. i've been obsessing about this for five days now, talking to damn near every one i know. pouring over sites on latin, witches, ciphers, lizard conspiracies, ground roots discordian type movements...i don't know. should i be expecting more letters? or for shadowy people to just show up at my job or home? or is this just a harmless prank? possibly even perpetrated by someone i know. i just don't know.

    i'm reminded of a quote from alan moore i heard recently. it goes something like "with magic, being in many respects a science of language, you have to be very careful with what you say, because if you suddenly declare yourself to be a magician, without any knowledge of what that entails, then one day you are likely to wake up and discover that that is exactly what you are."

    needless to say i'm still on the case, but this is kind of a brick wall i've run into. so really, if any of you out there are latin scholars or know a latin scholar or have any inkling what so ever about what this is or who may be doing it, please let me know.

    All hail eris
    All hail discordia
    For the very WEDGE
    May you find water and shade
    Bless the maker and his water. Bless his coming and his going.
    FNORD FNORD FNORD.
